A Dictionary of Americanisms
''A Dictionary of Americanisms on Historical Principles'' is a dictionary of English words and phrases that originated in the United States. The two-volume dictionary was edited by Mitford M. Mathews and was published in 1951 by University of Chicago Press.〔Mathews derived much of the book from ''A Dictionary of American English on Historical Principles'' edited under the direction of Sir William Craigie at the University of Chicago (1934-1944). Its 1911 pages of entries provides an important view of American culture as it evolved from its beginnings to the mid-20th century. ("Made in U.S.A." ), ''Time'' magazine. April 02, 1951.〕
The work should not be confused with John Russell Bartlett's work, ''Dictionary of Americanisms: A Glossary of Words and Phrases, Usually Regarded as Peculiar to the United States'', first published in 1848.
